There are so many things that we have written about handwriting and its effect on the student life, personal state of a person. But yet it seems logical for us to understand the larger picture that handwriting portrays in a life of human being. With the birth of each human being starts the history of handwriting and we believe that every human being has contributed through decades to improve the understanding about the penmanship functions.
With the start of a student’s education system engaged in trains them into the skill of handwriting. In most of the cases they just copy the teacher without the understanding of what they are doing and why. In a way they depend more on the skills of scribbling which they have gathered since they started toddling. Once they replicate the drawing properly they are trained to associate it with similar sounds taught through ages. The fact remains that until their 3rd grade they start learning various things without any understanding of the mistakes which they seem to have in their writing. Once on to higher education they understand the importance of legible writing as they have their grade/marks dependent on their writing skills. After they are through their higher education in to professional courses & into the mad world they have lost sight of the effects their handwriting is going have in the coming future.
Often professionals had to pay punitive damages just because of handwriting illegibility and the most common among them are medical practitioners, book writers, media personals ect. The main cause in this type of cases are, illegibility of written mater leading to wrong interpretations thus causing collateral damages.
Don’t you think we should save ourselves from committing such errors which can be corrected……….?

Whenever we talk of writing, the first thing that comes to mind is mm… we are referring to school going children. Well this is correct to some extent. The school going generation is the one which expresses what they have learned, mostly through writing.
These children of today will become the citizens of tomorrow. They will the torch bearers of tomorrow.
You must be wondering why this statement?
Because, I with my 10 years of research on over 100.000 handwriting samples have come to a conclusion that a handwriting has a lot to contribute when it comes to shaping the “person” in an individual.
Children with illegible handwriting often become introvert with low self esteem. This happens mainly because the child is often scolded by his teachers in front of the entire class, which humiliates him & he also faces a similar situation at home too. It is more so a situation of never ending mental torture that a child has to go through.
A child with low confidence always avoids eye contact with his teachers & this affects his entire learning process during his school days. Eventually this reflects in his total grades at the end of his sessions. It has a fallout effect on his future, as the child is left behind when it comes to picking up subjects of his choice in his higher studies.
This is one major reason we can conclude that handwriting contributes in shaping the personality & the success chart of a child.
Although computers have come to the rescue of such kids to quite an extent, but when it comes to learning of the spellings, having a good vocabulary or developing a sound written or even verbal communication has a lot to contribute.
Parents should understand the above discussed facts & counsel their wards, make them understand the benefits of good handwriting and also the adverse effect of an illegible handwriting.

I am not sure of capital Z in cursive. The rest of my letters are not steady, the slants are in all directions. It’s not for lack of trying. In grade school I was one of those who used pink pencils and dotted their i’s with little circles. I did not hesitate to experiment with different scripts, and for a brief period I even made two-story a’s, with the fancy overhang used in most fonts. But everything I wrote, I wrote in print. The Gen Y, the generation that shunned cursive, and now there is a group, a boom of tech-savvy children who don’t remember life before the Internet and who text-message nearly as much as they talk. They have even less need for good penmanship. We are witnessing the death of handwriting.
People born after 1980 generally have a distinctive style of handwriting: a little bit sloppy, a little bit childish and almost never in cursive. The explanation for this is that computers are responsible for increasingly illegible scrawl, but that’s not the case. The simple fact is that kids haven’t learned to write neatly because no one has forced them to. “Writing is just not part of the national agenda anymore. The parents, teachers, all are responsible for the present state of affairs.
Cursive started to lose its clout back in the 1920s, when view point was that because children learned to read by looking at books printed in manuscript rather than cursive, they should also learn to write the same way. By World War II, manuscript, or print writing, was in standard use across the U.S. Today schoolchildren typically learn print in kindergarten, cursive in third grade. But they don’t master either one. Over the decades, daily handwriting lessons have decreased from an average of 30 minutes to 15. More over these lessons are hardly checked by any one for quality, making the writer also very casual toward this activity.
The education fraternity has for inexplicable reasons are not stressing on the fact that learning a language, adding to one’s vocabulary, learning spellings all depends on the writing skills of the students. The parents & guardian need to be educated on these facts, because this in long term going to affect the entire career of their wards.
I firmly believe, handwriting can never loose its importance. It is just a passing phase.

Even though we do it every day, writing is one of the most complex tasks that human engage in, involving both motor and critical thinking skills. Some children are born with a naturally legible/ good handwriting, but ask the parents whose child’s handwriting is illegible others may let it go but ask the child who has this problem. Illegible handwriting is almost a ‘Disaster’ for some ……

In every Disaster, only family has the major concern, others may think that it may never happen to us. While an illegible handwriting is a pain for the child, it becomes a nightmare for the Mother. Every Parents Teachers Meeting (PTM) in the school is a pre-decided day of INSULT for the Mother as all the teachers have a serious complain about handwriting of the students.

Mother feels so embarrassing in that situation when she has been humiliated because of her child in front of the other parents.
She has very positive concerns because she can actually see her child becoming a back-bencher and not performing to the expected levels. She lives through unseen fears of future of the child being affected due to the lower grades; he may end up in schools owing to his handwriting. This often results into parents looking down upon their child as not so competent because making comparisons with other kids is an in-built notion that every parent carries. This behavior can even lead to a child feeling neglected in her home. Perhaps, this is one of the reasons contributing to the depressed adolescent.
It has been proved that illegible handwriting does affect the entire learning process of the child because of the regular negative remarks by his tutors, peer, parents etc. This affects his confidence and his normal learning abilities;
It is imperative that awareness about corrective options be made easily available for both parents and teachers.

Human Communication starts even before a toddler starts to walk or a child starts to talk. If you give a pen or pencil to a child he starts scribbling on a piece of paper or on whatever object that he can lay hands on. Believe me, these scribbles by the child are the first means of communication adapted by the little one to express himself. These basically are uncontrolled scribbles which forms base of controlled scribbles for which children are trained to learn alphabets, words, sentences and the language itself. Thus we can conclude writing is the first mode of communication the human child starts with even before he actually stats to talk.

Many children can comprehend as well as express written thoughts. These unique abilities of communicating through a native language clearly separate humans from all animals. Human speech as well as writing is highly dependent on the neuronal network located in specific sites of human being. Humans have developed an ability to communicate through oral language.

The Importance of Handwriting cannot be neglected in this hi-tech era also.

While some people seemed to be blessed with beautiful and expressive penmanship, others spend their entire adult lives wondering why their handwriting resembles a child’s clumsy scrawl. Fortunately, there are many tactics you can use to improve your handwriting.

In today’s computer-driven society, opportunities to practice penmanship and improve your handwriting are few and far between. However, regular practice is the most important step to improve your handwriting. Learning to write is similar to learning how to throw a baseball—you can’t expect perfect results on the first try.

To improve your handwriting, it is helpful to analyze your penmanship to determine what you like and don’t like about your lettering style. Are your letters slanted too far in one direction? Are some of your letters noticeably larger or smaller than others? Is the spacing between words uneven? Compare your handwriting to the writing of your friends, family, and coworkers to see how you measure up. Knowing what areas need improvement will make the process to improve your handwriting much easier.

There are many people who believe that your choice of writing instrument will affect your handwriting. To improve your handwriting, visit your local stationary store and pick up a variety of pens. Many people find that their handwriting improves when they use a fountain pen, but you may have your own preferences as well.

Proper technique is often the key to good handwriting. Research has found that many people who have poor handwriting form the letters with their fingers. They put the full weight of their hand on the paper, use the fingers to form the letters, and pick the hand up repeatedly to move it across the paper. This results in a tight, cramped lettering style. To improve your handwriting, let your shoulders and forearms do most of the work. Your fingers should only serve as the guides to forming your letters.

For some individuals, posture has a minor affect on handwriting as well. When you’re slumped in the chair, it’s difficult to form your letters properly. Sit up straight when you write to give your arm enough room to move across the page.

If you’re serious about learning to improve your handwriting, consider taking a calligraphy course as well . Although calligraphy is most often used to address wedding invitations or create decorative art pieces, the techniques you learn will improve your everyday handwriting as well.

Thus, Legible Handwriting and Calligraphy as a gem is an ornament in Prosperity and Refuge in Adversity.

In a broad sense, calligraphy is merely handwriting, a means of recording and transmitting information, sometimes clearly, sometimes not, but in most instances hastily and with little regard for its appearance. The World of Calligraphy is something more. It is an art—indeed the chief form of visual art—with a history, a gallery of great masters and hallowed traditions. It is an art of grace and elegance which inspires wonderment for its appearance alone.

What distinguishes Calligraphy from ordinary handwriting is, quite simply, beauty. Handwriting may express ideas, even great ideas, but to Artist it must express the richer dimension of aesthetics. Calligraphy to the Artist is “a spiritual technique,” flowing quite naturally from the influence of Nature.

The word of God revealed in the holy books, have inspired generations of calligraphers who have sought to reproduce its words with a perfection of style worthy of its contents. Nature has exerted a more subtle, a more indirect influence on the development of calligraphy: by discouraging the graphic representation of human beings and animals it channeled the creative energies of artists toward other decorative arts, especially calligraphy.

It is true that calligraphy is created in seconds, by means of single unrepeatable brush strokes, but it doesn’t mean that there are no rules governing it.

“The art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner” . The story of writing is one of aesthetic evolution framed within the technical skills, transmission speed(s) and material limitations of a person, time and place is what we call “Calligraphy.”

What if your power goes out? Your Blackberry runs out of juice? You’re stranded away from a printer? There are times that legible handwriting is absolutely crucial. Whether the power is on or off, odds are you have work that must get done. You may have to write out a document by hand and Fax it to a client, or you may be writing in order to type it up later. You may even have to scribble down the phone number of a tow truck. No matter which, the effort is worthless if no one can read it after-wards. It’s practically a version of Murphy’s Law: if you write down something important, it’s bound to be illegible.
And there are jobs that may take you away from your computer — hard to believe, but true. If you’re interested in philanthropic work that will take you deep into a third world country, it’s in your best interest to have good handwriting. Even if you have access to email at all hours of the day, the people you might work with probably won’t.
From the above, I intend to say, howsoever hi-tech you might be, and it may not be true for your surroundings. Hence, keep your writing skills updated because this is one ability of yours which will take you through any of the odd situations.

There are several diseases and conditions that can affect the brain and, in turn, the motor skills required for writing notes by hand. Neurologists can often tell a great deal about what is happening inside someone’s skull by looking at samples of their handwriting — especially if they have past samples. For instance, you can follow the progression of Parkinson’s disease in a patient very clearly through writing samples — handwriting can show the affects of the disease even in very early stages.
Different neurological disorders manifest themselves in different ways, especially on paper. Some can cause an overall decay in handwriting skills, while others can cause a patient to drop letters or words. There are, of course, a wide variety of psychologists who use graphology (handwriting analysis) for the purpose of understanding a person’s mindset as well. However, there is far more controversy about graphology than the simple observances made for the purpose of diagnosing neurological problems.

To conclude, we can say that handwriting can be of great help to both an individual as well as the medical professional.
